Judgement against Edom

Edom’s pride has led it to believe that it is invincible up high in its mountainous kingdom. Obadiah shatters this illusion by speaking God’s word against it: Edom will be ransacked as completely as a harvester harvests a crop. Once this has happened, there will be nothing left of it to glean.

Edom’s sin

God will destroy the warriors and wise men of Edom because of the violence that they have perpetrated against their brother nation, Israel. Specifically, their sins have included:

• staying aloof and unmoved when foreign nations looted Israel

• looking down on their brother nation and rejoicing in its downfall

• marching through Jerusalem’s gates with the foreign army that captured it

• lying in ambush to kill any Israelites who tried to escape from the city

• capturing survivors in the city in order to hand them over to their invaders.
